Quick and easy to use in critical situations
The Alteco LPS Adsorber is quick to prepare and easy to use which is crucial in critical situations. The process is effective without requiring extra investment and has a rapid onset of action.
Sepsis – one of the most common causes of death
Sepsis is the body’s overwhelming and life-threatening response to infection that can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death. Sepsis is one of the most common causes of death in modern intensive care. More people die annually of sepsis than of the most common forms of cancer – lung, breast and prostate – combined. Sepsis is caused by a specific toxin (endotoxin) entering the blood stream. Endotoxin, or lipopolysaccharide (LPS), is a major component of the cell wall of gram-negative bacteria.
When endotoxin is released into the bloodstream, a strong reactive response is produced by the immune system which can develop into sepsis. Alteco Medical’s product, the Alteco LPS Adsorber, effectively reduces endotoxin in the bloodstream and can thereby prevent or reverse the sepsis process.
By removing endotoxin from the bloodstream, the critical and life-threatening part of the sepsis process can be counteracted.
More about endotoxin and sepsis
Observations in COVID-19 similar to the immune response in sepsis: bacterial endotoxin mediates proinflammatory signaling, activates the innate immune system through and “leads to overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines”.
In the absence of a bacterial infection, antibiotic treatment can cause release of endotoxin, triggering endotoxemia and over-production of pro-inflammatory cytokines - an antibiotic-induced inflammatory storm.
ECMO is associated with an endotoxin-related, generalized inflammatory state. "The pulmonary, renal, and cardiac dysfunctions documented with prolonged bypass can all be related to a classic sepsis syndrome."
